Understanding the Deeper Problem Behind Substance Use
Substance abuse and the consequences that follow suit manifest in countless different ways. Every addict and alcoholic progresses through their use uniquely. One thing that every addict has in common, however, is the fact that they use drugs and alcohol to solve. Substances cause problems, but the problem lies within the biosocial factors that motivate use in the first place.
While we can all agree that drugs and alcohol cause countless problems, there is something to be said about the relief addicts gain upon consuming their drug of choice. If it wasn’t solving something for them, they wouldn’t be using to the extent they are.
I believe that addicts and alcoholics depend on substances to escape the interpersonal and environmental struggles they experience daily; fear, sadness, anger, trauma, and the list goes on. Although alcohol and drugs create a world full of consequences and tragedy, they “solve” via immediate relief and offering those who abuse them gratification that is shortly followed by perpetuated consequences and pain. How do we break this cycle?
Creating Meaningful Connections
As someone who lived in this cycle for nearly a decade, I found that the only way I could create a meaningful life for myself was to accept that my relationship with drugs and alcohol was broken and needed to change. I committed myself to sobriety and swore off substances entirely. But time and time again I found myself back to my solution, alcohol. I learned that I couldn’t just eliminate alcohol, and I needed to find sufficient substitutes that could fulfill the solving role alcohol played while taking me towards a life rich in meaning and purpose.
Our substance use group is designed to focus on what substance use is attempting to solve for our clients as well as what can sustainably take its place. Balancing the clinical insight offered by experts in the field of substance abuse with group unity and peer support will allow clients to unlock their full potential. The first step towards a meaningful life is always the hardest, and it’s not one we need to take alone.
